The evidence is clear to those who choose to see. Here in the North, our Polar Bears are starving to death due to early melts, not having the ice to hunt from. Bears have been found washed ashore, drowned due to having to swim greater distances to find ice from which to hunt. Only recently a mother and two young cubs were shot in Deline, they had travelled over 400 km from their normal hunting grounds in search of food. Autopsy showed the three were starving. Remote communities have RCMP detachments that do not have tranquilizer guns at the ready, which they should have in order to relocate these animals when they come into towns, an easier solution is to shoot. Winters in my area produce less snow that in years past, warmer temps etc. I do not find them as severe as back in Ontario my place of origin. It is time Canada started to live up to it's commitments.

Comment on Wait til Santa finds out: Toronto zoo kills its male baby reindeers

Finally, the dirty little secret of the zoo industry is revealed. The animals are mere marketing tools, to be moved around to increase dollars at the gate, or, euthanized as surplus for tragically being born the "wrong" gender.

Comment on Hope for the North

I am the person who started this Petition and who provided all of the above information and photos. I thank you so much for posting the article.

A recent email forwarded to me cites another typical scenario: a young female dog soon to come into heat, the owner queried about how soon she would, and once given the answer said it would soon be time to shoot her as she did not want to deal with pups. The female was turned loose, taken by someone else, tied to a two foot lead, Barked alot, and was turned loose again. Thankfully she has been taken in by a caring person, but now there is an urgent need to find foster care for her. She is a 5-6 month old Husky pup.

One of many on-going situations, very common place. Positive Action HAS GOT to be taken .

Comment on U.S. Exposed as Leading Ivory Market

This is a scandal! They are 'collections' that must be 'managed' in size and content. Like stamp collections or coin collections. Fundamentally wrong for living creatures.

Comment on Wait til Santa finds out: Toronto zoo kills its male baby reindeers

so proud of their breeding programs. would love to see the stats on how many babies are euthanized. Syncrude is a company with oilsands in Alberta, and they failed to get their noisemaking cannons going in time to scare off a flock of mallard ducks before they landed on a pond full of oil; 500 were killed and only five survived thanks to this filthy stuff that we really must learn to manage with much much less of. Yet another form of captivity, humans to oil.

Dipesh, thanks for your thought-provoking piece.
