Anger Over Culling of Yellowstone’s Bison

Yellowstone National Park’s bison are being killed by hunters or loaded into trucks by park employees to be sent to slaughterhouses. 1,195 animals, about ¼ of the park’s population have met this fate so far and the culling is expected to go on through April.
Heavy snow has driven the starving bison out of the park to search for food at lower elevations. Once outside the park, they are killed because some might carry a disease called brucellosis, which can be passed along to cattle.

An agreement to create a haven for the bison has been stalled because it has has not received the needed federal financing.

“The public should be outraged,” said Amy McNamara, national parks program director for the Greater Yellowstone Coalition. “An American icon is being taken to slaughter.”
